Incense

Incense is an important offering made to God in Judaism and some parts of Christianity. In the Bible, God commands Moses to make incense or ketoret using specific ingredients and methods. Since then, it has been used during the most illustrious services held on special occasions in the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and Holy Temple. It's typically made out of many different herbs, balms, aromas, or oils mixed to be pleasing before the Lord.

In ancient times, the ketoret was burned twice daily throughout the year, on the golden or "inner" altar that stood within the inside section of the Temple, distinct from the outside copper altar on which animal sacrifices and libations were offered.

Although some traditions have changed, incense remains important to the Jewish faith. So much so that the highlight of Yom Kippur is the High Priest's entrance into the Holy of Holies with a pan of blazing coals in one hand and an incense holder full of ketoret in the other. The ketoret, without a doubt, is a significant element of Jewish religious traditions.

Incense in the Bible

Incense has been used to drive away illness, pests, and plagues, as well as provide a cover for the presence of God in the holiest chambers of the Temple. The Bible recounts the story of an epidemic that afflicted the Israelites in the desert because they complained and blamed Moses and Aaron for Korach and his followers' deaths (Numbers 16).

Aaron is then told by Moses to go among the congregation and atone for their sins with an incense burner. Aaron does so, and he "stands between the living and the dead," ultimately putting an end to the epidemic.

The incense, which has been burnt since the days of Moses to this day, is still considered a symbol of atonement, life, and hope. Many Jewish and Christian followers turn to this holy smoke amid today's issues, making the wooden incense burner a sought-after item.
