A tallit is a traditional Jewish prayer shawl. It is typically worn by men (but sometimes women wear them as well) during morning prayer services, on the Sabbath, and for holidays. Rectangular in shape, tallits are four-cornered garments with a blessing around the collar, four prayers in each corner, and tassels (tzitzits) attached to each of the corners.
The tallit is said to have started as an outer garment with the corner fringes ordered by God. It likely looked like the abaya, a Bedouin cloak that protects people from the weather and has black stripes at each end. A tallit was more refined, however, and comparable to the pallium (rectangular cloak worn by Greek and Roman men).
In the time of ancient Israelites, obedience to the Biblical command from God caused them to attach special tassels to their clothing. In Numbers 15:37–40, God relays to Moses that the children of Israel should put fringes on the borders of their garments to remember His commandments.
According to Jewish learning, wearing a tallit gadol is an important tradition for young men after their Bar Mitzvah in the millennia-old Judaic faith. It's worn during morning services, on the Sabbath, and may also be seen on "Thisha BeAv" or Yom Kippur, which starts before sundown.
The Messianic tallit is a prayer shawl worn by Jews, Messianic Jews, and Christians who also believe in the Torah.
Jesus Wore a Messianic Tallit
According to the Scriptures, Jesus also wore a tallit when He walked the earth. Many Jews and some members of Christian orthodox congregations wear a tallit as a reminder that all the commandments were fulfilled throughout Yeshua's life.
