History of the Mezuzah Scroll
The custom of hanging the mezuzah on the doorpost has been followed by the Jews since the 14th century. In fact, scholars say that the custom could be much older, since references to the custom of mezuzah observance can be found in the notes of Flavius Josephus – the noted Romano-Jewish historian who lived in the first century.
The mezuzah scroll is typically made from the parchment of a kosher animal and has two Biblical passages inscribed on it – Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and Deuteronomy 11:13–21. It is rolled (usually from left to right) and enclosed in a case, which can be made from any material.

It is believed that the mezuzah is a sacred object that can channel divine energy through it and protect your household. The Torah says that a mezuzah has the power to “not allow the destroyer to come into your house to smite you’ and that affixing a mezuzah to your doorpost can ‘multiply your days and the days of your children.”
The very first instance of mezuzah observance is mentioned in the Exodus, where the Almighty warned the Jews to mark their households with the blood of a sacrificial lamb so that they could be protected against the forces of destruction. This is why it is believed that a mezuzah can protect you and those in your household against physical and spiritual harm.
How Is a Mezuzah Scroll Used?
You should attach the mezuzah to the right side of the doorway – at around eyeball height or shoulder height – so that you as well as others in your household can touch it easily. The mezuzah must be affixed in such a way that the top is pointing inside and the bottom is pointing outside. If there is no space available to affix it in such a slanted manner, you can affix it vertically.
When you affix the mezuzah, you must recite the blessing which goes “Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to affix a mezuzah.”
