Messianic Judaism is a religion rooted in the Jewish ethnic identity. It holds that Jesus of Nazareth was the Jewish Messiah and that his teachings can be applied to modern life. The word "Messianic" comes from the Hebrew word "Mashiach," which means "anointed one." The Mashiach is a future king who will rule over Israel and bring peace to the world. Many Messianic believers live in Israel, but there are also Messianic Jewish congregations in other parts of the world. The movement is growing, and there are now Messianic Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Whether you are a Gentile Christian, Messianic Jew, or Jewish Christian, you can find a place in the movement.
The Modern Messianic Jewish Movement
The Messianic movement began in the early 20th century when a group of Jews who believed in Jesus Christ as the Mashiach started to meet. They believe that Jesus is coming back to earth soon and that only those who accept him as their Savior will be saved from sin. Jewish converts to Christianity were the first to start the movement.
In the early days, many Jewish Christians were persecuted by the Orthodox Jewish community. Messianic Jews were seen as a threat to traditional Judaism. However, there has been a growing acceptance in recent years. You can find a Messianic Jewish Alliance and other Messianic congregations in many countries.
Jewish Customs and Traditions
The Messianic movement has kept many of the Jewish traditions and customs. Messianic Jews celebrate Jewish holidays and also observe the dietary laws of Jewish believers, which forbid the eating of certain foods, such as pork and shellfish. They usually wear traditional Jewish clothing, worship together, and study the Bible — both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. One of the most important traditions is the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. This is a ceremony in which a Jewish boy or girl becomes a community member. The Bar or Bat Mitzvah is an important part of Jewish law and a significant time for the child and their family and friends.
