Jewish Tallits

The tallit (Jewish prayer shawl) is a significant aspect of the Jewish tradition and is worn as a reminder of God's Commandments. The word "tallit" comes from the Hebrew root T-L-L טלל, which means "to cover or envelop." Jewish men wear tallits during prayer, especially during the morning prayers and at Yom Kippur. It is also customary for the groom to wear a tallit garment during his wedding ceremony.
These prayer shawls are four-cornered garments, typically made of wool or linen. With traditional garments, you attach fringes or tzitzits to the four corners as the Bible instructs.
The numerical value of all letters in the word tzitzit adds up to 600. Each of the fringes has 8 threads and 5 knots, for a total of 613 when added to the initial 600. This number is significant since it represents all the commandments in the Torah scrolls.
There are two kinds of tallits. A tallit katan is a smaller prayer shawl meant to be worn under the clothing. A tallit gadol is a larger prayer shawl that wraps around the shoulders above any clothing. This unique prayer shawl reminds every Jewish person of the importance of the law of God being close to their hearts and an intricate part of Jewish life.
