Jewish Mezuzahs & Scrolls
51 products
A mezuzah is a beautiful and unique Jewish item that should be hung on the doorpost of a Jewish home as a symbol of God's protection, according to the Biblical commandment. It serves as a sign indicating the people within the dwelling are of the Jewish faith.
Mezuzahs are small wooden or metal boxes containing a parchment of writings. The Torah instructs followers to take His words to heart and to "inscribe them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates" (Deuteronomy 6:9). Traditionally, the mezuzah is hung at the entrance to a home on the right side at eye level, slightly tilted toward the door.
They're made up of two parts: the mezuzah case and the mezuzah scroll – kosher or non-kosher and known as a klaf. Two important passages from Deuteronomy are written on the klaf or scroll inside the case. These passages are referred to as the Shema prayer, which begins with the famous words "Shema Yisrael" ("Hear, O Israel") in the Jewish tradition.
There are many strict rules around the preparation of a mezuzah kosher scroll, but Jewish law doesn't require any particular specifications for the case. In general, these mezuzah cases can be anything from simple plastic tubes to ornate masterpieces made out of steel or stone, depending on your discretion and privacy preferences!
What Are Kosher Mezuzah Scrolls?
For a mezuzah to meet the rigorous kosher standards set in Judaism, it must contain an authentic scroll handwritten by a Sofer on parchment handmade from a kosher animal. A Sofer is a Jewish scribe who has spent years learning how to write the Mekhilta (Jewish law) or Jewish-themed literature with care and dedication according to Halachot (Jewish customs). Even the tiniest flaw in the letters can make the scroll unusable.
As the Mezuzah parchment is rolled up, only a single word should be seen: "Sha-dai". This is Hebrew for "the three-letter name of God" and also translates to mean “Guardian of Isreal's doors". Those who have a mezuzah on their front doors feel considerably more secure when they see it.
Is It Okay to Give Mezuzahs as Gifts?
Certainly! For many people, giving a mezuzah is a thoughtful gift for any Jewish friends and family, especially if they just moved into a new home. In times when we are all looking for ways to show our love in different forms, the most important thing is to try to make an impact on another person’s life! A beautiful new mezuzah, which they will see and appreciate every time they enter or leave, will not soon be forgotten by the recipient.
